MARSHALL PETAIN 1917 - [Item Number 5942]
Bone china plate of continental manufacture and measuring 210mm/8 ¼” in diameter. In the centre in military uniform is a coloured picture of Marshall Petain. The border is decorated in gold with a garland of ferns. In April 1917 Petain took over from Nivelle as Commander in Chief of the French Army following a mutiny by French soldiers. He is probably best remembered as an aging soldier being asked by the Nazis to form a government in France under the Occupation of the Second World War.

This was to be known as the Vichy government.
